Why choose the Harmony test over other NIPT brands?
The Harmony test is the most proven brand of non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) available. It has been used in more than 1 million pregnancies worldwide. For more information, please follow link to the Harmony website: Harmony | The Most Accurate NIPT Test for Prenatal Screening (roche.com)
Why choose the Harmony test over traditional screening?
The Harmony test screens for the same abnormalities as traditional first trimester screening performed at most NHS trusts, however, the Harmony test is much more accurate.
Correctly indicates high chance for Downs syndrome | Incorrectly indicates high chance for Downs syndrome | |
Harmony NIPT | In more than 99% of cases | In less than 1 in 1,600 cases |
Traditional First trimester screening | In 79% of cases | In 1 in 20 cases |
How does the Harmony test work?
When you are pregnant, your blood contains tiny amounts of your baby’s DNA. The Harmony test looks at this DNA to provide accurate information about the likelihood for the most common chromosome conditions such as Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome and Patau’s syndrome.
How is the Harmony test performed?
Our clinically trained phlebotomist will take a blood sample from your arm.
This sample is then sent to TDL Genetics for processing. TDL Genetics is part of THE DOCTORS LABORATORY in London. Please follow this link for more information: Harmony® Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) for patients | The Doctors Laboratory (tdlpathology.com)
We will email the results to you within 7-10 days. Please note results may take longer due to public holidays, strikes etc.
When can I have the Harmony test?
The Harmony test can be done from as early as 10 weeks. Please note that your dates must be confirmed by a dating scan.
Does the Harmony test include an ultrasound scan?
No, an ultrasound scan is not included. Please be aware that you must have a dating scan to have the harmony test to ensure that your dates are accurate. You can either add a dating scan on to your appointment when you book or if you have already had a dating scan you do not have to have one with your harmony test but you must bring your dating scan report with you or we will not be able to do your harmony test.
Will I always get a result?
3 out of every 100 women will require a repeat test. Of those who require repeat tests approximately 2 out of 3 will receive a result. We will issue a refund if the lab is unable to generate a result.
Does a low chance result mean the baby does not have any of the abnormalities that the test screens for?
No, it means they have a lower chance of having an abnormality, however as with any screening there is a possibility of a false negative. The chance of getting a false negative with the harmony test is much lower than with conventional screening.
If I have a high chance result does that mean that the baby has an abnormality?
No, not necessarily. It means there is a higher chance of having an abnormality and you will be referred to your local NHS for further testing and counselling.
What if I have twins?
The Harmony Non invasive Prenatal Test and technology can also be applied to twin pregnancies but is not suitable in the case of a vanishing twin.
The Harmony test is not a suitable option in the following situations:
- In pregnancies with more than 2 babies
- In pregnancies with a demised or vanishing twin
- In woman under the age of 18
- In pregnancies with maternal aneuploidy
- In pregnancies with maternal transplant
- In pregnancies with maternal malignancy
- In cases of mosaicism, partial chromosomal aneuploidy or translocations
